Attracting Young People to learning a Skilled Trade as a Career

WHAT IS JA WORLD
?
Located on Broward Community College on their North campus, the 59,500 square foot facility is dedicated to the effective and
practical teaching of business, entrepreneurship and personal finance. JA World will be anchored by the two, new, experienced-based JA programs.

JA FINANCE PARK for 8th Graders
When students visit JA Finance Park, they enter the world of business. They get to see, touch, and experience free enterprise
on their own terms. Students study different financial decisions to be made, consider the options available, and construct a personal
budget. Members of the community, including businesses and parents, are actively involved in JA Finance Park as they assist
students to achieve at their highest level. JA Finance Park participants:
  1. Will first prepare for the experience with their teachers during six weeks of classroom study.
  2. Then exercise this new knowledge during a day-long visit to JA Finance Park.
  3. Are challenged to manage an assigned identity that includes marital status, number of children, annual income, education
attained and job type.  They prepare budgets (to include stock investment) and visit vendors to purchase housing, food,
    furniture, insurance, and automobiles.
Earnings potential and career options are immediately associated with educational success. Researchers agree that the reality of
budgeting and purchasing is the best tool for linking school success with the best careers.
WHAT IS CASF’s INVOLVEMENT?
While preparing our children for life after school, our education system often fails to mention that learning a skilled trade is a viable choice
leading to attaining success. JA Finance Park is a way for 8th graders to experience free enterprise and CASF is taking advantage of this
initiative to expose these children to the earnings potential and career options available in the skilled trades. Now every 8th grader throughout
Broward County will have a chance to have each major skilled trade with its earning potential explained to them at an age where they are starting to
think about their futures. Here's some idea of what CASF's Store Front will look like:

WHO STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE?
Designed the interior space.   Stiles Construction Company, James A. Cummings, Central Florida Equipment,
Elcon Electric, Lotspeich Co. of Fla., Cayman Manufacturing, Safety Guys, Baron Signs, Rightway Plumbing and Pomeroy Electric have all participated in making CASF's Store Front a one-of-a-kind showcase for the skilled trades.  How about you?  Call 954-974-6333 to find out what your company can do to help.
